Zihuatanejo Mexico

Part 3 - Ixtapa

We spent a couple of hours one afternoon in Ixtapa. I'm really glad we visited the town and even happier that we didn't stay there. Ixtapa is a short drive north from Zihuatanejo but it feels miles apart for so many reasons. I remember hearing about Ixtapa back in the 80's when the town was pretty new and being heavily marketed in the United States. It's still a popular resort destination for Americans and Canadians.

I didn't take many pictures of Ixtapa, just a few snapshots to remember the town.

The street is lined with well manicured lawns and beautiful landscaping.

Part 2 - Playa Blanca

Hotel Las Palmas is located on Playa Blanca (white beach), about 15 minutes South of Zihuatenejo. The resort is down a dirt road behind the airport. The road takes you to the beach, and a small handfull of residences and resorts that are located there.

This is the road as you enter Hotel Las Palmas. I'm not even sure it has a name.

Part 1 - Hotel Las Palmas

We just returned from a week long vacation in Zihuatanejo Mexico. The trip was a gift from my husband's boss for his 50th birthday. The gift was over the top. I have no idea how I can ever say thank you enough.

I was nervous about the trip for numerous reasons, all of which melted away when I stepped through the doors of The Hotel Las Palmas. Seriously, I imagine heaven to be exactly like it. The realization startled me just a bit because I am not quite ready for heaven.

I have never been so relaxed in my life. I wish there was a way to bottle the feeling. We spent long days doing almost nothing and it felt perfect. Time moved slow. Days were long. I woke up for the sunrise every day. There was no TV, email, facebook or twitter. I didn't care.

I took 1500 photos, some of which I like but none of which completely capture the moment. Yet, I can tell a story better with pictures than words so I will share a bunch of them here.

Dealing With Jpeg Logos

What to do when a client gives you a jpeg logo file

The first thing I do when I client sends me a jpeg logo is complain. I try not to complain out loud. My clients just want me to take care of it. They don’t want to hear me complain. Still I admit sometimes I get aggravated. There are so many people in sales and marketing that don’t understand why their jpeg logo is worthless for printing. Here’s an article I wrote to help explain why, When Vector Art is Really Vector.

Next I explain that the jpeg logo will not print satisfactorily and I asked for a vector eps file. Sometimes all I have to do is ask, and my client sends me the correct file. Sometimes my client can’t locate a vector version of their logo. When this happens I take these three steps to solve the problem.

Server / Email Problems

My website was experiencing some server problems causing it to run really slow. Everything had to be moved to a new server and in the process my email stopped working for a few days. Email and website are now back up and running. Apologies to anyone who may have received a bounce back undeliverable email from me.

Join A Creative Group Or Club

Get out of your office and away from the computer screen

If you’re a creative type like me you should belong to a creative group or club in your community. I joined PAG (Photo Arts Group) this past February. I discovered PAG when I saw an exhibit at my favorite local coffee shop. I wasn’t looking to join a group at the time, but the images I saw really inspired me. I found out where the meeting place and time was and went to the next scheduled meeting. I remember it was raining that night. I was a little nervous, not sure what to expect and wondering if I would fit in (whatever that means). Going to that meeting was one of the best decisions I have made for myself this year.

You Will Make New Friends
You might be into, painting, sculpture, ceramics, quilting, scrapbooking, creative writing, photography, digital art or any number of creative passions. Whatever it is, I bet there is a group nearby of creative folks just like you.

I’ve enjoyed making new friends who share a passion for creative photography. I continue to learn a lot from them. I’ve also learned a lot about myself and gained some confidence too.

image of Breathless Book

When I opened the Breathless packaging, the first thing I noticed was the smell of the offset printing ink. It almost made me miss my prepress days, when I spent a lot of time around presses. There is something gratifying about seeing one of my designs in print. It’s a tangible thing, something that can be held, felt and smelled. Breathless is extra special because it is my first printed book design.

It could very well be the last.
