Mostly a One Way Street

One Way Street Sign

Adobe Mobile applications connect our devices to our desktop applications allowing us to create any where at any time. Most of the traffic between mobile and desktop is routed through the Creative Cloud Libraries. Unfortunately at this time, the mobile workflow primarily runs on a one way street going from Mobile to Desktop with very few round trips available.

Year End Digital House Keeping

Get Your Computer Files in Order

The year end is a great time to do some digital house keeping. I’ve spent the last few days backing up and organizing my digital devices. Admittedly, I should be doing these things on a more regular basis, but work happens and some things get away from me.

At the end of every year I take a hard, honest look at my digital clutter. Here’s my year end check list to get things back in order. What is yours?

Time Machine Backup

Time Machine runs year round on my Mac Pro. Most of the time this works without me having to think about it, but occasionally the backup drive stops working for no apparent reason. So this week I reformatted the Time Machine backup hard drive, after first running a Time Machine backup to a secondary external drive.

Can I combine Lightroom catalogs into a single catalog?

Yes. It's Easy.

It’s very easy to merge Lightroom catalogs. This comes in handy if you have created a catalog on a laptop while traveling,  or have multiple catalogs that should be combined into one.

While in Lightroom go to File>Import From Another Catalog... This imports all of the information from the chosen catalog including, edits, collections and smart collections.

How do I save my develop edits in Lightroom?

The catalog automatically saves a complete history of edits.

All edits are stored within the Lightroom Catalog. They are completely reversable at anytime. There is no need to “save” your work unless you want access to the edits outside of Lightroom.

You can write external XMP edits for individual files while in the Develop Module. Go to Photo>Save Metadata to File, -S (Mac) or Ctrl-S (PC). This writes a sidecar XMP file to the hard drive for raw images. For JPEG, TIFF, PNG and PSD files, metadata by defualt is embedded in the file.

How do I get photos from my camera into Lightroom?

First, get your photos onto your computer.

Image files must be on a hard drive before Lightroom can import them.See “Where Should I Put My Photos?”.

Lightroom can copy images to a drive, and import them at the same time, but I don’t recommend this method for beginners.

Use the “Import Add” method instead. This is the best and safest way to import photos. It puts you in control of file management.
