The view of the Capitol Building is impressive from every angle.

Washington DC architecture

I love how pedestrain friendly the streets and sidewalks are. The best way to see the city is by foot, but beware of the Summer heat and humidity.  Water and headcoverings are a must.

Dia De Los Muertos

San Luis Rey Mission, Oceanside CA

Dia De Los Muertos - Day Of The Dead is a Mexican Holiday where family and friends gather to remember those who have died. The San Luis Rey Mission in Oceanside, CA holds an annual carnival to celebrate the day. This was my first time attending.

I love the vibrancy of Mexican culture. The colors, iconic images, celebration of life and reverance for deceased loved ones are on full display at the carnival. It is a visual feast and lots of fun to photograph.

9/11 Memorial

NYC Travel Pics

Reflections in Photos

This past July I visited NYC for the first time. We went to the 9/11 Memorial on the first morning of my first day in the city. As you can imagine, I spent a lot of time looking up that morning. This was taken while standing on the corner of Greenwhich St. and Liberty St., waiting to get in the 9/11 Memorial entry line.

I captured a lot of good images at the memorial, and I'm happy about that. But, I am also keenly aware that my camera shielded me from really feeling the emotions of my surroundings. This is a truth about photographers. While we see things others may not, we often miss being in that moment and all the feelings that go along with it.

Details

My camera helps me see details and abstractions in the scenes I might otherwise forget. I love photographing these kinds of images, and they always end up being some of my favorites, regardless of where they were captured.

These detail images were all taken at Las Palmas or along the beach near by.

Playa Blanca, Zihuatanejo, Mexico

Local Beach Critters

Playa Blanca is a relatively deserted beach, except for the myriad of non human life. Dolphins swim and play along the shoreline and whales are commonly spotted a little further out. We saw both, but unfortunately I wasn't quick enough to capture any pictures.

So I took lots of bird pictures instead.

Heaven on Earth, Part 1

The first time we stayed at Las Palmas, two years ago, I literally teared up when I stepped onto the property. It is exactly how I imagine heaven. The second visit was just as heavenly. Las Palmas Beach Suites

Real World Concert Photography

Photoshop World - Pre-Conference Class

I'm most comfortable with subjects that don't move much, preferably shooting with a tripod and lots of time to compose my image. I will never be a concert photographer, or an event photographer or even a portrait photographer.

So why did I pay an extra $199 to take the pre-conference, Real World Concert Photography class at Photoshop World, taught by professional photographers Alan Hess and Scott Diussa? Because I wanted to have fun, and I wanted to challenge myself with something I am not very good at.

It was a challenge all right. I made pretty much every mistake possible. Here's what I learned.

Painted Highlights

with Photoshop Adjustment Layers

Purple Flowers before image
Purple Flowers Original Image

These purple flowers are pretty, but the image is flat. It needs some highlights to bring it to life. I could apply some overall contrast to the image, but I perfer to paint my highlights, giving me more selective, creative control.

This tutorial will take you through the non destructive steps to breathe life into a flat image with light painting. The screen grabs are all done in Photoshop CS6, but this technique will work in older versions of Photoshop.

Renewal

Photographic Composited Art

This past January I saw the Digital Darkroom show curated by Russell Brown. The show inspired me to push myself and use my Photoshop skills to create unique imagery.

Renewal is my first major composited, photographic creation.  I am happy that it is done and proud of the effort. The first 10 hours or so were the most difficult.
