Balboa Park Photography

I signed up for a 5 week seminar photography class. The first class was held last Thursday at Balboa Park. When I signed up for the class I didn’t know that my son’s senior awards night would be held at the same time. I decided to go to the park early, spend a couple hours shooting on my own, introduce myself to the instructor at the start of class time and then head back home for senior awards.

My brain was a jumbled mess as I drove to downtown. My thoughts felt like pin-balls bouncing around in my brain.

What am I doing spending money and time? … Why?.... Did I get enough work done today?…Am I properly managing my clients and their expectaions?... How do I find more good clients?... What about yesterday's meeting at Roland?... Where has technology come and where is it going?... What are the possibilities?.. What does it mean for me?... And my sons, our oldest finishing his second year in college, youngest about to graduate high school with high honors… Shouldn’t they be front and center in my thoughts?... What about my husband, working and earning while I head out seeking personal enrichment… How do I make more money?... What am I doing?

Organ Pavillion Shadows

I grabbed my camera and headed into the park with no clear idea of what to photograph. I looked for interesting details and these shadows in the Organ Pavilion caught my eye first.

ISA International Sign Expo

Reflections from the eyes of a graphic artist

Last Friday I attended the ISA International Signs Expo in Las Vegas. The primary goal was to meet Darek Johnson from Signs of the Times magazine.

Darek and I made fast friends through email but this was our first opportunity to meet in person. Darek was a popular guy at the show. Seemingly everyone we passed wanted a few seconds to speak with him. He graciously greeted them and then introduced me as “Theresa, The Award Winning Adobe Expert.” I hope I didn’t look as overwhelmed as I felt.

I also meet Darek’s lovely wife Li, and spent some time exploring the show with her. Li and I share a love for photography so we had fun looking for compelling imagery. After the show I joined Darek and Li for dinner where we spent some time getting to know each other a little more. Well, truthfuly I ate dinner and they drank coffee, saving room for their later dinner plans. I enjoyed their company so much that I wished I didn’t have to catch a flight back home.

Show Highlights

The show was large. Anything and everything related to signage was represented, from banner grommets, LED lights, channel letters, mobile cranes and more. I tried to see everything but focused on things related to print.

Flower Power PAG Show

Coordinating my first show

Saturday we hung PAG's Flower Power photography show. I am proud of how great it looks because I coordinated the show. This is my first time coordinating an art show and I’m sure it’s not my last. It was a positive, educational and rewarding experience.

I volunteered to be the show coordinator after some friendly ribbing from the rest of the group. Admittedly I was a little nervous. What do I know about coordinating a show? Fortunately it was really easy thanks to helpful and supportive PAG members.

Insight on Metal – Exploration Atlantis

Posted in
Composites, Metal, QR Codes and a peak into my creative mind.

To create is to explore. This is a simple fact. It’s easy to accept this fact but difficult to embrace. There is a fear of trying and failing, of wasting time and accomplishing nothing worthwhile. I think linearly, work linearly and try to stay focused on a clear goal at the finish line. Linear thought is great for production work but not so good for the creative process. Sometimes the end goal isn’t clear and that’s the point.

Fear of failure can paralyze creativity. I found some solace in reading “Art and Fear” while on vacation. I am not alone in my fears. The point is to keep doing, exploring, creating, making, and experimenting.

Exploration Atlantis, printed on brushed metal is both the result of a creative exploration and the start to many more creative journeys.

Part 8 - Details & Textures

I love colors and textures and the details of things I see. I take pictures of everything, looking for the beauty in the details. These images, especially the abstracts, are amoung my favorites.

This is the final post in my Zihuatanejo Mexico photo journal. I'm kind of sad to have finished it.

Part 7 - Tentaciones Hotel

Our final two nights in Zihuatanejo were spent up on the hill in a hotel called Tentaciones (temptations). The view is 180˚, offering endless photo ops. The changing light continually repaints the beautiful scenery. I took many, many pictures trying to capture its beauty.

This is a full panorama of the bay, with the town bathed in morning sunlight. The town is to the right. Playa de Gatas is tucked in the cove towards the peninsula on the left. The boats look much further away then they really were. The round pink shape in the lower right is a staircase entrance to the hotel.

Las Vegas Images For Passions

PAG group show at the Vista Wellness Center

I have four images in the PAG show Passions. This is the first time I am showing a body of work. It took a long time, and a lot of thought before I decided to participate in this show. The show theme didn’t spark any immediate ideas. I couldn’t see how any of my work or interests related to the theme Passions.

Part 5 - Zihuatanejo Bay

Panorama of bay

Zihuatanejo Bay is lined with some of the best beaches in the world. The waters calmly caress the shores with a steady beat of small waves.

This is a quick panorama shot looking south from the spot where we first landed on the beach. We cooled off under the shade of the thatched roof patio covers to the left. Almost dead center of this picture is a white hotel on the ridgeline of the hill in the distance. We didn't know it at the time, but this would be our hotel for the final two nights of our stay.

Part 4 - The Town of Zihua

street view of hills

Our first impressions of Zihuatanejo were not exactly positive. The hillside is stacked with rundown homes. The town is old and it is crowded. There are way more cars on the road than we expected to see.

We had no idea where we were going or what we should try and see. We just parked the car and started walking. It was hot out, really hot.

Part 3 - Ixtapa

We spent a couple of hours one afternoon in Ixtapa. I'm really glad we visited the town and even happier that we didn't stay there. Ixtapa is a short drive north from Zihuatanejo but it feels miles apart for so many reasons. I remember hearing about Ixtapa back in the 80's when the town was pretty new and being heavily marketed in the United States. It's still a popular resort destination for Americans and Canadians.

I didn't take many pictures of Ixtapa, just a few snapshots to remember the town.
